Today’s news roundup covers major developments across tech, finance, and global affairs.

OpenAI teams up with Broadcom for custom AI chips, while British self-driving startup Wayve eyes a $2 billion funding round. In the Middle East, Hamas releases the final 20 Israeli hostages in a landmark deal brokered by President Trump.

Meanwhile, gold and silver hit record highs amid US-China trade tensions and expectations of Fed rate cuts.

A glance at major news developments on Monday.

OpenAI partners with Broadcom for custom AI chips

OpenAI is teaming up with Broadcom to create its very first custom AI processors, a big move toward building a massive AI infrastructure.

Under this multi-year partnership, OpenAI will focus on designing the chips, while Broadcom will handle their development and rollout starting in the second half of 2026.

The goal? To deploy AI chips with a combined power capacity of 10 gigawatts, that’s about the same energy usage as over 8 million US households.

This collaboration builds on OpenAI’s recent deals with Nvidia and AMD, part of a broader effort to secure the massive computing power required to meet the growing demand for AI services.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized that creating custom AI accelerators is key to unlocking AI’s full potential and embedding AI capabilities directly into the hardware itself.

The news gave Broadcom’s stock a significant boost, jumping more than 7%, indicating that investors are confident in this strategic move.

Hamas releases final 20 Israeli hostages

Hamas has released all 20 remaining Israeli hostages held in Gaza, marking a major breakthrough in the ongoing Middle East conflict.

These hostages, held for nearly two years, were handed over to the Red Cross and reunited with their families in Israel in emotional scenes.

In return, Israel freed around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, including some serving life sentences and others detained since the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023.

US President Donald Trump, who helped broker the deal, visited Israel to speak at the Knesset and meet with the families of the hostages before heading to Egypt.

There, he joined President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and more than 20 world leaders at a summit to endorse the Gaza ceasefire and push forward a peace plan aimed at long-term stability.

Trump called the moment a “historic dawn” for the region, highlighting hope for peace while acknowledging that making it stick will be a challenge.

Wayve eyes $2 billion funding round

British self-driving tech startup Wayve is in talks with Microsoft and SoftBank to raise up to $2 billion in new funding, a move that could value the company at around $8 billion, according to the Financial Times.

This comes after Nvidia announced plans to invest $500 million in Wayve, which is now expanding beyond the UK and US into countries like Germany and Japan.

Founded in 2017, Wayve has already raised over $1 billion, mostly led by SoftBank, with backing from Microsoft and Nvidia.

The company stands out in the autonomous driving space by using AI-based machine learning, rather than relying on traditional digital mapping like many of its competitors.

Gold goes above $4,100

Gold hit a record high of $4,103.58 an ounce on Monday as tensions between the US and China ramped up and investors started betting on potential Federal Reserve interest rate cuts.

Safe-haven demand spiked after President Donald Trump announced 100% tariffs on Chinese imports, along with new export restrictions on key software, set to kick in this November.

Silver also climbed to an all-time high of $52.07 an ounce, fueled by similar trade concerns and tight supply.

Analysts say both metals could keep climbing, thanks to ongoing geopolitical risks, strong central bank buying, and steady private investment, even though some short-term ups and downs are expected.
